In view of the Sinhala and Hindu New Year, which falls on April 14th, a New Year festival organized by the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit for the naval pre-school was held at SLNS Gemunu in Welisara on 07th April 2014. First Lady Madam Shiranthi Wickramasinghe Rajapaksa graced the occasion as the chief guest. Member of the Western Provincial Council, Hon. Ms. Hirunika Premachandra was also among the distinguished invitees that attended the colourful event.
Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage, Navy Seva Vanitha Unit President, Mrs. Srima Colombage, Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy, Rear Admiral Jayantha Perera, Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe, senior naval oficers, members of the NSVU and parents of the students were also present on the occasion.
Festivities were organized giving pride of place to the age old customs and traditions associated with the national celebrations. They provided a rich cultural experience to the students allowing them to share the joy of the New Year with their parents as well as colleagues. The event enabled them to forge bonds of friendship and instilled respect for their culture. Games and activities for the kids as well as for the parents were conducted providing merriment to the festive occasion. Fabulous prizes and gifts were presented to the winners by the guests.
