The Inter Command Badminton Tournament 2018 was held at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee from 1st to 5th October 2018 with the participation of more than 125 players from all Naval Commands. Meanwhile, the tournament returned to Trincomalee after 14 long years. The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe graced the final matches of the tournament and the awards ceremony, as the Chief Guest.
The occasion was also attended by the Commander Eastern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Sumith Weerasinghe, the Deputy Area Commander of the Eastern Naval Area, Commodore Noel Kalubowila, the Commandant Naval and Maritime Academy, Commodore Kalana Jinadasa and a hoast of senior naval officers.
The Afloat Command clinched the Men’s Championship and then Western Command emerged the Women’s Champion in the tournament. Meanwhile, Lieutenant PYC Sudeera secured the open-men’s single title and open-men’s double title, with Lieutenant Commander Asela Chandrasekara. Woman Able Physical Training Instructor AGAC Wijeratne won the open-women’s single title and partnered with Woman Able Physical Training Instructor WGLC Sepalika to win the title for open-women’s double.
Further, Commander JMBSB Jayaweera secured the victory in the ‘over 40’-single event and he partnered with Captain Nuwan Gunasekara to win the ‘over 40’-double event. Meanwhile, Rear Admiral Sumith Weerasinghe won the ‘over 50’- single event and the same category’s double event was won by Rear Admiral Sumith Weerasinghe and Commodore Kalana Jinadasa. Men’s novices’ event was won by Sub Lieutenant Ranawana while Lieutenant ACS Fernando won its women’s title.
