Navy assists restoration of normalcy in affected communities following inclement weather

In response to the emergencies following the adverse weather condition in the island, Sri Lanka Navy has deployed 18 relief teams, 13 dinghies and 2 Emergency Rescue Boats in the Southern and Western provinces. Accordingly, relief teams are pressed into action in Mathugama, Walallavita and Bulathsinhala areas in the Kalutara district, Wattala in the Colombo district, Neluwa, Nagoda, Thawalama, Niyagama, Baddegama, Aviththawa and Wakwella in the Galle district and Kotapola and Akuressa in the Matara district as of now.

Meanwhile, several groups of naval personnel belonging to the Navy’s Diving Unit, Special Boat Squadron, Rapid Response Rescue & Release Unit (4RU) and Marine Battalion were engaged to remove debris blocked underside of the Aviththawa and Wakwella bridges, restricting the downstream of water and posing a threat of flood condition in the area. Navy teams are currently making every endeavour to avert the possible threat, with their prompt action.
