A group of naval personnel attached to Fast Attack Craft belonging to the Northern Naval Command arrested 02 suspects with 86.4kg of Kerala cannabis during a patrol carried out in the seas north of Point Pedro this morning (27th February).

The naval craft had initially spotted a suspicious boat movement in the northern seas and had found 86.4kg of Kerala cannabis upon inspecting the suspicious dinghy. The stock of cannabis had been packed into two parcels and it is believed that the suspects have attempted to smuggle them into the country from India. The arrested suspects, cannabis and the dinghy will be handed over to the Kankesanthurei Police for onward legal action. This year alone the Navy had seized 442.2kg of Kerala cannabis on 06 separate occasions, during special operations conducted in northern seas.

Going in parallel with the government’s initiatives for the prevention of drug abuse, the Navy has introduced a wide range of tactical missions in the seas around the island that had paved the way to seize a large hauls of narcotics this year alone. Further, the Navy will continue to tighten its grip on this illegal activity with the use of latest technology in due course.
