Update to the news release on ‘Liberian-flagged bulk carrier runs aground at Little Basses ’ on 23rd January 2021

Sri Lanka Naval Ship (SLNS) ‘Rathnadeepa’ boarded with a team of Navy divers reached MV ‘Eurosun’ that ran aground at Little Basses about 5.5 nautical miles (10km) off the southeastern coast of the island on 23rd January and preliminary investigation into the incident got underway.

Liberian-flagged bulk carrier runs aground at Little Basses

A bulk carrier named ‘MV Eurosun’ en route to Trincomalee, Sri Lanka from Abu Dhabi Port of UAE carrying clinker, ran aground at Little Basses which is about 5.5 nautical miles (10km) off the southeastern coast of the island.

Update to the news release on ‘Navy in search and rescue operation to locate fishermen on sunken Indian poaching vessel in Sri Lankan waters’ on 21st January 2021

The 04 corpses of fishermen of the sunken Indian fishing trawler were handed over to the Indian Coast Guard at the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) around 10.00 a.m. today (23rd January 2021).

Corpses of two (02) more fishermen, of the Indian fishing trawler which sank northwest of Delft Island, were recovered this morning (21st January 2021) by Navy diving teams engaged in the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation.

Sri Lanka Navy launched a Search and Rescue (SAR) operation last night in search of a sunken Indian fishing boat and its fishermen, in Sri Lankan waters about 8 nautical miles (15 km) within the IMBL northwest of Delft Island, following a resisting arrest incident took place in the dark hours on 18th January 2021.

Navy rescues a dinghy stranded at sea

Sri Lanka Navy, with the mediation of its Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Colombo), sprang into action to rescue a dinghy with 02 fishermen swept away to the Indian waters, on 15th January 2021. The dinghy that departed Silawathura for fishing practices had faced this distress due to a failure in its outboard motor (OBM).

Navy brought ashore a distressed fishing trawler

Sri Lanka Navy, in cooperation with Indian High Commission in Colombo, brought ashore a fishing trawler drifted to the Indian waters along with 02 fishermen aboard, on 13th January 2021. The trawler which left for fishing from Gurunagar, Jaffna had carried away towards Indian seas, having gone into an engine failure.

Over 8700kg of smuggled dried turmeric seized in northwestern seas

A special operation carried out by the Navy in dark hours on 08th January 2021 in the northwestern seas of the island resulted in the seizure of about 8769kg of dried turmeric, attempted to be smuggled into the island and apprehension of 12 Indian nationals. Meanwhile, the seized consignment of turmeric along with Indian nationals was brought ashore on 09th January for onward investigations.
