Southern Naval Command joins ‘World Tourism Day’ clean-up drive at Jungle Beach

28 Sep 2026

Personnel from the Southern Naval Command joined a pilot coastal clean-up programme at Jungle Beach in Unawatuna, Galle, on 27 September 2026, to mark World Tourism Day.

The initiative was organized by the "Clean Sri Lanka" Secretariat to support environmental preservation and promote sustainable tourism in the region. Naval personnel worked alongside local authorities and volunteers to collect and dispose of solid waste, including discarded plastics and polythene, across the Jungle Beach coastal ecosystem.

The event coincided with the official opening of "Mihi Surakuma Piyasa," a facility built by the Ruhunu Tourism Bureau to provide local and foreign tourists with access to a clean coastal environment.

Deputy Minister of Vocational Education, Hon. Nalin Hewage, state officials, representatives from the "Clean Sri Lanka" project, Commander Southern Naval Area Rear Admiral HNS Perera, and members of the armed forces attended the programme.
