Navy rescues 11 fishermen from Indian trawler ran aground off the Delft Island
The Sri Lanka Navy rescued all eleven (11) fishermen from the Indian fishing trawler that ran aground South off the Delft Island, early this morning 6 August 2026.
Accordingly, Sri Lanka Navy units were dispatched for this mission to rescue the distressed fishermen. Following the rescue, the fishermen were safely brought to Delft Island and provided with essential supplies by naval personnel.
The trawler had reportedly crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) into Sri Lankan waters and engaged in bottom trawling before it had run aground.
Meanwhile, the eleven (11) fishermen along with the trawler and belongings were handed over to the Delft Police for onward legal proceedings.
True to its international search and rescue (SAR) obligations, the Sri Lanka Navy remains steadfastly committed to responding swiftly to safeguard the lives of persons in distress at sea.
