‍Bus stop built in Northern Province to honour former Navy sailor

A bus stop built in memory of a former Royal Ceylon Navy and Sri Lanka Navy sailor was declared open for public use today, 25 August 2026 in Chunnakam, Jaffna.

The facility, located along the Jaffna-Kankesanthurai road, was formally opened under the patronage of Northern Province Governor, Hon. Nagalingam Vethanayagam and Deputy Area Commander Northern Naval Area, Commodore Buddhika Rupasinghe.

Born in Inuvil, Jaffna, late Leading Seaman Mailu Kanagaratnam joined the Royal Ceylon Navy on 18 June 1959. He subsequently served as a Radio-Electronic Mechanic in both the Royal Ceylon Navy and Sri Lanka Navy before retiring from service on 7 February 1974. He passed away on 25 August 2024.

The bus stop was constructed by his family in his memory and was handed over to the public at a ceremony attended by naval personnel from the Northern Naval Command and other invitees.
