International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem marked with mangrove planting drive

29 Jul 2026

The Navy undertook a worthy environmental initiative, planting 400 mangrove saplings along the Verugal Aru River, Ukkeni Lagoon and adjacent coastal areas on 26 July 2026.

The programme was initiated by the Eastern Naval Command, as part of the 'Clean Sri Lanka' national programme to conserve the country's coastline. The initiative forms part of the Sri Lanka Navy's ongoing contribution to the 'Clean Sri Lanka' national project, in which the Navy serves as a key stakeholder of the Presidential Task Force implementing the programme.

Organised in collaboration with Tokyo Cement Company PLC, the mangrove planting campaign aims to strengthen coastal protection, preserve biodiversity and enhance resilience to climate change.

The programme was attended by the Commanding Officer of SLNS Lankapatuna and naval personnel attached to the establishment.
