Navy’s expertise powers another step towards safe drinking water access to community in Tissamaharama
A new Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant, set up by the Sri Lanka Navy as part of its Naval Social Responsibility (NSR) project, was declared open for community use today, 12 October 2026, at Ellagala Junior School in Tissamaharama, Hambantota.
Although the Lunugamvehera water supply scheme meets the daily water needs of the school children and residents in the locality, access to clean drinking water has remained a longstanding concern in the area, where kidney-related illnesses have been reported.
The plant was established through the initiative of the Ministry of Health, with technical and skilled labour support from the Navy and financial assistance from Perera and Sons (Pvt) Ltd. It is expected to improve access to safe drinking water for pupils at Ellagala Primary School and a large number of people living in the surrounding communities.
With the opening of this facility, the total number of RO plants established and handed over to the public with the contribution of the Navy has reached 1,162.
