University students gain insights into hydrography and marine geospatial information

28 Oct 2026

A group of university students participated in a training programme on hydrography and marine geospatial information at the Sri Lanka National Hydrographic Office (SLNHO) in Colombo on 27 October 2026.

The session was attended by 14 students from the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries at Wayamba University and 4 students from the Department of Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

Lectures covered fundamentals of hydrography, its importance and its contribution to safe navigation, maritime safety, coastal development and marine research. The sessions highlighted the role of the Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service in conducting hydrographic surveys and providing essential marine geospatial information to support maritime activities and national development.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for the students to broaden their knowledge of hydrography and explore its practical applications in fisheries, marine engineering, and ocean-related research. It also highlighted the importance of knowledge-sharing and collaboration between academic institutions and the hydrographic community.
