CISM DAY RUN 2014 PRESS BRIEFING

A press briefing, presided over by Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage was held at the Lighthouse Galley Conference Room on 11th February 2014 in view of the CISM Day Run 2014, which is scheduled to be held on 16th February 2014. Chief of Staff of the Navy and Committee Chairman, Defence Services Games, Rear Admiral Jayantha Perera and Secretary, Defence Services Sports Board and International Military Sports Council Sri Lanka Representative, Commodore Dushyantha Amaranayake were also present on the occasion.

Sri Lanka Navy has made elaborate arrangements to hold the CISM Day Run 2014 with the support of sister services and the Defence Services Sports Board, chaired currently by Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage. The chief of defence staff and services personnel headed by respective Commanders will participate in the mega event scheduled to be flagged off in front of the Colombo Lighthouse.

With the express purpose of marking the presence of CISM (Brussels-based International Military Sports Council) worldwide, the year 2006 saw the birth of CISM Day Run. The event aims at promoting the practice of sports in the military context, bringing together all community of Sports, which includes Sports Federations, Olympic Committees and other International Institutions in contact with the Armed Forces and Ministries of Defence.

Since the first edition, in 2006, this special day is held every year on 18 February worldwide. Totally integrated in CISM solidarity principles, the event also intends to contribute to world peace and has become a tradition between CISM-family worldwide.

The purpose is to disseminate the CISM motto, “Friendship through Sport”, among the millions of soldiers of the 133 member nations, gathering for one day, under the sport and flag peace, the brothers in arms of the whole world regardless of physical fitness, sports abilities, social conditions, ranks, gender or age; everybody together, shoulder-to-shoulder, engaged in the principle of sport for all and with one goal only: the world peace.

Distribution of certificates to the participants in the 'CISM Day Run 2014' on Sunday (16) takes place at the Colombo Lighthouse premises soon after the event. The chief of defence staff and service Commanders will grace the occasion as Chief Guests.
