Navy Clinch Their First Ever Knock-Out Rugby Championship

Creating history, the League Rugby Champions, Navy Sports Club clinched their first ever Knock-out Rugby Championship, winning the coveted Clifford Cup. They beat Havelock Sports Club 27-22 in a closely fought final match, which was worked off at the Race Course Ground in Colombo on 09th March 2014. His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa, First Lady, Madam Shiranthi Wickramasinghe Rajapaksa, Minister of Sports, Hon. Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage, President of the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Srima Colombage, Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Jayantha Perera, Director General Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Rear Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne and senior naval officers were among the spectators who came to witness the match. Navy scored 03 goals and 02 penalties while Havelock scored 02 goals, 01 try and 01 penalty in reply.

At the conclusion of the match, trophies and certificates were awarded to the winners of the knock-out rugby tournament 2014. His Excellency the President presented the Championship Cup to Rohitha Rajapaksa, Captain of the Navy Sports Club which won the title remaining unbeaten throughout the whole tournament. Navy’s Nuwan Hettiarachchi, who had a superb league and knock-out season with sensational performances throughout, was awarded the trophy for the Player of the Tournament.
