Navy Seva Vanitha New Year Festival &Trade Fair at SLNS Gemunu

In view of the forthcoming Sinhala-Tamil New Year, the Seva Vanitha Unit of the Navy conducted a trade fair at SLNS Gemunu in Welisara on 11th April 2014. The fair was declared open by President of the MOD Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa. She also presented Three Wheelers to six naval personnel under the Navy Seva Vanitha Welfare Project for the use of their family members, who are full disabled and with special needs, to coincide with the day’s events. President of the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Srima Colombage, Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Jayantha Perera, Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe and senior officers of the Navy were also present on the occasion.

Consumer commodities of all kinds, which included raw and dry food items, clothes for the festive occasion as well as electrical appliances and kitchen utensils, were available at reduced prices with free transportation to the venue on multiple routes. Utilizing the convenience offered, naval and civilian personnel of the Sri Lanka Navy and their family members turned up in large numbers to make their New Year purchases.

The New Year Festival held at the same venue was declared open by President of the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Srima Colombage. It consisted of traditional games and fun-filled activities for the entertainment of the visitors and their kids. The organizers had made special efforts to highlight the multi-cultural heritage of the country. Accordingly, traditions and customs unique to respective cultures were presented with model villages being created on location for the attendees to see how the national festival is celebrated by Sri Lankans that live in harmony under one flag.

The annual New Year trade fair is one of many projects organized by the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit for the benefit of the naval personnel and their families. The profit received is channeled for the welfare of the naval personnel.
