Ordinary Seaman Lakruwan wins 02nd Place at International Triathlon - 2014

Ordinary Seaman Lakruwan Wijesiri of the Sri Lanka Navy won the second place in his category (Olympic Distance for age 18 to 24) at the International Triathlon - 2014 held at the Bintan island in Indonesia on 17th May 2014. Over 1,400 athletes from 41 countries participated in the competition, which is regarded as the Asia's premier triathlon festival.

Chief founder and trustee of the Foundation of Goodness (FOG), Mr. Kushil Gunasekara was the first to identify the potential of Lakruwan as a sportsman when he was practising in the Bryan Adams swimming pool at the FOG Sports Academy. Having noticed his talents in sports Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage recruited Lakruwan in the Navy in 2012 when he was Commander Eastern Naval Area. Coincidentally, the Navy Commander was the first from Sri Lanka to congratulate Lakruwan for his feat. Professor Rohan Gunaratna, who was at the venue to witness Lakruwan’s performance that brought credit to his motherland, was elated at the victory made possible with his personal assistance rendered to the promising Sri Lankan athlete.

Lakruwan has a number of impressive achievements to his credit, which include the 04th place at Singapore Triathlon in 2013. With the confidence and his superb physical strength nurtured after joining the Navy, he aims to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games scheduled to be held in Brazil.
