NWNC- World Environment Day 2014

As part of the Sri Lanka Navy’s community development and social responsibility project, the North Western Naval Command launched a mangrove planting project in accordance with the 2014 world environment day’s theme, “Raise your voice, Not the sea level’’, on 05th June 2014 under the patronage of Commander North Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Dayananda Nanayakkara.

The Command Medical Department of the North Western Naval Area has joined hands with Tokyo Cement Company [Lanka] PLC to uplift the environment in the North Western Naval Area as a prime social responsibility. Rapid destruction of mangroves by harmful human activities has led to coastal erosion, worsening effects of tsunami, reduction in sea food harvesting, air pollution, sea water pollution, increase in global warming, destruction of bio-diversity and imbalance in environmental sustainability. Under the mangrove planting project, 500 plants will be planted under natural environmental conditions at Kalpitiya lagoon, Kala-oya and Modaragan-aru estuary as the first step. A mangrove plants nursery has also been set up at SLNS Vijaya in Kalpitiya with the technical assistance of Tokyo Cement Company to assist the project.
