Commander of the Navy lays foundation stone for Sailors’ Married Quarters Complex at Welisara
Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jayantha Perera laid the foundation stone for the Senior and Junior Sailors’ Married Quarters Complex at Welisara on 11th August 2014. Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Ravi Wijegunaratne, Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Dayananda Nanayakkara, senior naval officers attached to the Naval Headquarters were also present on the occasion.
The married quarters complex, a long-felt need fulfilled by the Commander of the Navy, will comprise of five 04-storeyed buildings. Each building equipped with all amenities can accommodate 16 naval families. Two buildings are allocated for senior sailor families while the remaining 03 buildings are allocated for junior sailor families. All the housing units have attached bathrooms along with spacious living areas. The Navy Commander also declared open the VNF Wardroom at SLNS Lanka. The new wardroom fulfills a long existing requirement at the Volunteer Naval Headquarters.
At SLNS Gemunu, the Navy Commander declared open the training center for computer courses, which are organized by the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit for children of the naval personnel. The computer courses, initiated on a concept of Navy Seva Vanitha President, Mrs. Shalika Perera, are conducted free of charge for children studying from grades 01 to 09. The center opened at SLNS Gemunu also provides computer awareness programmes for wives of the naval personnel in the Western Naval Area. Similar programmes are also planned for the Eastern and Southern Naval Areas as part of the welfare projects implemented by the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit for the benefit of the naval personnel.
