The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jayantha Perera declared open the newly-constructed alms-hall at the Nagadeepa Purana Rajamaha Viharaya on the Bak Full Moon Poya Day, which fell on the 03rd April 2015. The religious ceremony held in connection with the dedication of the premises to the Maha Sangha was presided over by the Chief Incumbent of the temple, Ven. Nawadagala Padumakitti Thera. The Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Eric Jayakody and senior naval officers of the Northern Naval Command were also present on the occasion.
The construction of the alms-hall was carried out by the civil engineering personnel of the SLN, as part of the Sri Lanka Navy’s long term assistance, by utilizing the funds provided by the Venerable Thera. It fulfills a long-felt need of the historic temple and enables devotees to offer alms to the Maha Sangha at a spacious building, which is equipped with all facilities required for the purpose.
At the ceremony, the Commander of the Navy distributed the presents which were arranged by the Venerable Thera among the children of the Nainativu Island.
