Navy celebrates Vesak
 
 
 

Sri Lanka Navy celebrated Vesak, which marks the Birth, the Enlightenment and the Passing Away of the Gautama Buddha, in its bases island wide. Naval personnel took part in various religious activities conducted in view of the thrice-blessed day joining the national celebrations. Special Poojas, Sil campaigns, alms givings, blood donation and shramadana campaigns were held at the naval establishments belonging to the Eastern, South Eastern, Southern, Western, North Western, Northern and North Central Naval Commands. Colourfully decorated Vesak lanterns were also put on public display and crowds who gathered to view them were treated with food and refreshments.

In pursuance of the Buddhist teachings, naval personnel took part in the religious observances held on Vesak full moon day. They listened to the Dhamma preached by prominent Buddhist monks in the Island and enriched their lives with the wise counsel offered.

These celebrations were conducted in collaboration with the Buddhist Association of the Navy. The Navy Seva Vanitha Unit also joined hands in organizing the religious and community welfare activities which were held under the direction of the respective Area Commanders and Commanding Officers of naval establishments and ships.
