JNU confers B. Tech degree on 167 SLN officers


One hundred sixty-seven (167) Sri Lanka Navy officers were conferred with the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) degree by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) at a degree awarding ceremony held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on 12th January 2016. The Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Eng. Karunasena Hettiarachchi graced the occasion as the chief guest and he was received by the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy, Rear Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe. The Vice Chancellor of the JNU, Professer Sudir Kumar Sopory was among the distinguished invitees in attendance.

At the special convocation jointly organized by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Indian Naval Station (INS) Shivaji, 88 SLN officers received the Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering and 79 SLN officers received the Bachelor of Technology degree in Electrical Engineering. All of them had successfully completed their academic studies at INS Shivaji, a Defence Institute of the Government of India recognized by the JNU for the award of the Bachelor of Technology Degree (B. Tech).

The convocation address was delivered by the Chief Guest who appreciated the Indian Government’s friendly assistance in training Engineering officers of the Sri Lanka Navy and the important role played by SLN Engineering officers in maintaining the operational capability of the SLN’s ship and craft. The Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy presented a special memento to the JNU Vice Chancellor as a token of appreciation.
