Sri Lanka Navy conducts its New Year Festival – 2016 in Welisara
 

The New Year Festival of the Sri Lanka Navy, organized under the directive of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, was held on a grand scale at SLNS Gemunu on 10th April 2016. The Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy, Rear Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe and Mrs. Ranasinghe graced the occasion as Chief Guests.

The Commandant of the Volunteer Naval Force, Rear Admiral Travis Sinnaiah, Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Jayantha De Silva, a host of senior officers, sailors and family members were among the large gathering of guests present on the occasion to experience the real spirit of the New Year.

Many events were organized for the entertainment of children, naval and civil personnel, including a across country race, bicycle race and many more traditional events associated with the New Year. The winners of the games received fabulous prizes in appreciation of the contribution made to the happy occasion.

Moreover arrangements were also made to entertain the crowds with the musical flair of the Navy Beat Group. The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne and the President of the Navy Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Yamuna Wijegunaratne graced that event as chief guests for the proceedings in the evening. The musical show which was attended by a number of renowned singers of the country, was dazzled by the performance of the Navy’s cultural troupe. Further, the President of Navy Seva Vanitha Unit crowned the woman sailor who was chosen as the “Aurudu Kumariya” and gave away prizes for the woman sailors who became second and third in the same contest.
