Survey Department joins hands with Sri Lanka Navy in flood mapping

Survey Department of Sri Lanka has sought cooperation with Sri Lanka Navy in order to expedite data collection and mapping of recently flood affected areas in Colombo and Gampaha districts.

Accordingly, SLN deployed its officers and sailors along Kelani river basin in Biyagama, Malwana, Dompe, Hanwella areas since 28th May to collect data. The task was assigned to Sri Lanka Navy Hydrographic Service and other Information Technology and Geographical Information System (GIS) specialists also involved in the project. Further, Naval personnel will be deployed along Attanagalle river basin for the same purpose on completion of data collection in the above areas.

Unavailability of required field data especially along densely populated Kelani river basin wrought havoc during recent floods. Therefore, identifying its importance as a national cause, these two national institutions joined hands to prepare much needed field maps aiming to assist in disaster mitigation in the country.
