Navy renders assistance to clean up garbage in Basawakkulama Tank in Anuradhapura
 

As part of its community service programmes operated on the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Sri Lanka Navy rendered assistance to clean up garbage in Basawakkulama Tank in Anuradhapura. The cleaning programme coordinated by the Navy's Research and Development Unit, was initiated by a team of naval personnel led by Commander Anthony Weerasinghe, under the supervision of Commander North Central Naval Area Commodore Merril Wickramasinghe. From the sidelines of garbage cleaning in Basawakkulama Tank, started on 16th September 2019, the Navy's Research and Development Unit is also in the process of developing some garbage incinerators in view of the proper removal of garbage collected in the Sacred City of Anuradhapura.

Apart from the above social responsibility projects, here are some more initiatives carried out by Navy's Research and Development Unit with the intention of environmental conservation,

1. Production of solar powered lamp posts

2. Production of wind powered water pumps

3. Erection of solar powered elephant fences

4. Installation of biogas plants at naval premises

5. Installation of solar powered RO plants

6. Mechanisms for proper garbage disposal
