Launching of the book " ASYMMETRIC WAREFARE AT SEA: THE CASE OF SRI LANKA"

"ASYMMETRIC WAREFARE AT SEA: THE CASE OF SRI LANKA" the book authored by a former Commander of the Navy, Admiral (Retd) Dr Jayanath Colombage, was launched at the Admiral Somathilake Dissanayaka Auditorium at the Naval Headquarters today (14). Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne graced this occasion as the Chief Guest and the first copy of the book was presented to him by the author.

In his book the author discusses different range of spheres such as; theories of asymmetric warfare, rise and fall of Sea Tigers, warfare capability of Sea Tigers, sea control, operational art and counter measures of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN). Further the book gives its readers an insight into the history and development of the range of issues pertinent to asymmetric warfare at sea.

On the other hand this book of Admiral (Retd) Colombage turned out to be the first-ever compilation of its kind written on the asymmetric warfare and swarming and indigenous tactics of the SLN which eradicated 3 decade long ruthless terrorism from the motherland. Also this will be a must read book of reference for the present and future generations of the Navy.

Addressing the gathering, Commander of the Navy congratulated Admiral (Retd) Colombage for the timely compilation of this book and expressed pleasure for being able to attend the occasion as the Chief Guest. Admiral (Retd) Colombage, became the first ever doctoral graduand of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, being conferred with a PhD degree. His area of study was ‘strategic studies’ focusing on ‘maritime security’ taking Sri Lanka Navy’s fight for Sea Control as a case study. It remains to be the first time in Sri Lankan military history that a retired service commander received a PhD degree.

Admiral Colombage was the 18th Commander of the Navy. He has been decorated with Rana Sura Padakkama for gallantry and awarded with many other medals that include Vishista Seva Vibhushanaya and Utthama Seva Padakkama. Successive Commanders of the Navy have issued him with ‘Letters of Commendation’ for his exceptional execution of duties and achievements in numerous fields.

He has achieved many firsts in his distinguished, decorative and unblemished naval career spanning 36 years. Admiral Colombage has been conferred with two Masters Degrees; Master of Science in Defence Studies and Master of Arts in International Studies. The book launching ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Neil Rosyro, Director Generals and a host of senior officers from the Naval Headquarters.
