Two Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants declared open in Vavuniya and Nochchiyagama

Following the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, the Sri Lanka Navy implemented two more community service programmes in Vavuniya and Nochchiyagama areas focusing on the wellbeing of the general public who is deprived of safe drinking water. Accordingly, a Reverse Osmosis system installed at Vavuniya Police Station was declared open for community use on 4th November 2016. Over 500 Police personnel attached to the Vavuniya Police Station and residents in the area will be benefited by the new facility. The financial contribution for the RO system was made by the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Kidney Diseases.

Meanwhile the second similar facility was vested in the general public, under the patronage of the Chief Incumbent of the Kelani Viharaya, Venerable Prof. Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangha Rakkitha Thero, in Mahalindawewa, Nochchiyagama today (6). The RO system is capable of producing safe drinking water for over 45 families in the area. The provision of finance for the facility was cancelled through ‘Sirasa Gammadda 100 days’ programme by the Chief Prelate of Kelani Viharaya.

Amidst heavy showers and unfavorable weather conditions, Navy’s Research and Development Unit, utilizing their expertise and knowhow, strive to fulfill the safe drinking water requirement of people who live in areas that are prone to Chronic Interstitial Nephritis. Moreover they had installed 42 RO systems throughout the country thus far and facilitated more than 22,300 families and 16,000 school children with safe drinking water. The Navy wishes to continue with these kind of noble causes in the future as well.
