Navy apprehends two persons engaged in illegal fishing activities
 

The Sri Lanka Navy managed to apprehend two local persons engaged in illegal fishing activities at two separate locations yesterday (29). Accordingly, on receipt of intelligence information the naval personnel attached to SLNS Kashyapa in Vakarai belonging to the Eastern Naval Command, in coordination with the officials of Batticaloa Police and Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, during a raid carried out in Batticaloa, apprehended a suspect who was stealing fishing nets and harvest of the fishermen, in off Batticaloa sea area.

During the arrest; a dinghy and 85 kg of fish were taken into custody and the suspect along with items was handed over to the Kalawanchikudi Police for onward investigations.

Another person was arrested for engaging in illegal fishing practices using unauthorized fishing nets in the sea area of Marsankudal, by the naval personnel attached to SLNS Agbo in Madagal in the Northern Naval Command. Along with the suspect; a dinghy and an unauthorized fishing net were also taken into naval custody. The arrested person and fishing gear were produced before the Jaffna Fisheries Inspector for further legal action.
