Sri Lanka Navy’s Social Responsibility Project receives special recognition
 

The Sri Lanka Navy’s Social Responsibility Project of installing Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants, received special recognition at the awards ceremony organized by the Japan Sri Lanka Technical & Cultural Association (JASTECA).

The awards ceremony was organized for the 21st time and it was held under the patronage of the Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, HE Kenichi Suganuma and Deputy Minister of State Enterprises and Entrepreneurship, Hon. Eran Wickramaratne, at the Hotel Galadari in Colombo on 04th March. During the event, a special award for undertaking the organization’s social responsibilities was conferred on Deputy Director Naval Research and Development, Captain (E) Priyankara Dissanayaka.

Upon the assumption of duty as the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne introduced a wide range of social responsibility projects which were undertaken by the Sri Lanka Navy to serve the interests of needy population. Following those footsteps, the Sri Lanka Navy’s Research and Development Unit, under the leadership of Captain (E) Priyankara Dissanayaka, kick started numerous efforts to address prevailing social issues. Accordingly, the Sri Lanka Navy’s Research and Development Unit initiated a timely social responsibility programme on 22nd December 2015, to provide people in Kidney prone areas with safe drinking water free of charge. As a result, they could set up Reverse Osmosis plants in a short span of time, throughout the country.

In its early stages, naval personnel willingly donated a sum of Rs. 75/- to the Naval Social Responsibility Fund with the noble intention of production and installation of RO facilities. Utilizing those funds together with provisions made by the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease, the Navy is installing RO systems in different parts of the country. Incidentally, the Navy had installed 153 Reverse Osmosis plants and facilitated over 73, 200 families and 56, 700 school children with purified drinking water provided free of charge.

Mass media reports also reveal that the Navy’s Social Responsibility project at present has topped the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) rating charts. Moreover, this magnanimous project of the Navy has drawn the attention of both local as well as international communities and the project in on the run with generous financial provisions made by them.

The able leadership of the Commander of the Navy has being instrumental in the success story behind the Navy’s Social Responsibility Project. Besides, the project has immensely helped the effort taken to eradicate the kidney disease from the country. In addition, the award itself is a remarkable achievement of the Sri Lanka Navy which continues to undertake similar social responsibility projects with maximum efficiency and higher degree of creativity. The efforts would surely be focused towards the betterment of the general public and ultimately the nation as a whole.
