Commander of the Navy attends several key events of UN Vesak celebrations
 

The ceremonial opening of the Buddha Rashmi Vesak Zone which was presided over by the Indian Prime Minister, Hon. Narendra Modi, got underway yesterday (11) at the Seema Malaka premises of Gangaramaya Temple, Hunupitiya. The Indian Prime Minister attended the United Nations Day of Vesak 2017, held in Sri Lanka, as the Chief Guest. The occasion was also graced by the Sri Lankan Prime Minister, Hon. Ranil Wickremesinghe. The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne was among the distinguished guests who attended this significant occasion.

The illumination of the Vesak Zone with colourful light, was undertaken by the Sri Lanka Navy. The Chief Incumbent of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya, Adhikarana Sangha Nayaka Most Venerable Galaboda Sri Gnanissara Thera, Honorable Ministers, diplomats, dignitaries, distinguished invitees and a large number of devotees were present on the occasion.

Further, the Commander of the Navy was yesterday (11) present at the Amadahara Vesak Zone and the second day of Bhakthi Gee programme held under the patronage of the Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media, Hon. Karunarathna Paranawithana, organized by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL). The Navy percussion band made their significant contribution in Bhakthi Gee programmes held on 10th and 11th at the Amadahara Vesak Zone.

Meanwhile, Vice Admiral Wijegunaratne also joined a certificate distribution among the winners of island wide essay competition organized by the ANCL in collaboration with the Young Men's Buddhist Association Colombo (YMBA).

In appreciation of the Navy’s contribution, the Chairman and Board of Directors of ANCL presented a memento to the Commander of the Navy on this occasion. In return, the Commander of the Navy gifted the memento to the Navy percussion band as a mark of appreciation of their performances.

The occasion was attended by; the Chairman of the YMBA, Mr. Sumedha Amarasinghe, directors of the ANCL, staff members, newspaper editors, distinguished guests and a large number of general public.
