Commander of the Navy declares open new NR&DU wing in Welisara
 

The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne declared open a new wing dedicated to the Naval Research and Development Unit (NR&DU) at the Welisara Naval Complex today (July 12). 

Upon Vice Admiral Wijegunaratne assumed duty as the Commander of the Navy, several Social Responsibility Projects were launched making use of the technological competencies of the NR&DU and Captain (E) Priyankara Dissanayake was appointed the head of the Naval Research and Development Unit. Following his appointment, Captain Dissanayake together with his fellow naval personnel devised a low budget yet high quality Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant.

Going further ahead with this excellent initiative, the NR&DU went onto produce 230 RO plants in 11 districts in the country, facilitating over 107,510 families and 80,185 school children with uninterrupted safe drinking water, free of charge. Along with the evolution of the project, the need for a dedicated laboratory cum workshop was felt in order to test water sampling and maintain / repair RO systems. As such, the facility opened today will be henceforth the house for aforesaid testing and repair / maintenance tasks pertinent to the RO facilities installed across the country.

Speaking on the occasion, the Commander of the Navy hailed the noble tasks undertaken by the Naval Research and Development Unit, making use of the advanced technologies and knowhow of the naval personnel. Further, Vice Admiral Wijegunaratne extended his profound gratitude to Captain Priyankara Dissanayake and his able team who made all these projects a reality on the ground. The occasion was also attended by the Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Niraja Attygalle, Director Generals and a host of senior officers and sailors.
