Commander of the Navy attends the opening of Dialysis and Kidney Transplant Unit of Kandy Teaching Hospital

The Dialysis and Kidney Transplant Unit of Kandy Teaching Hospital was ceremonially declared open by the Minister of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine, Hon. (Dr.) Rajitha Senaratne today (July, 13). The Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne was also present on this occasion as a special invitee.

Further, the Director of Kandy Teaching Hospital, medical staff of the hospital, distinguished guests, senior naval officers and a large number of residents from the area attended this significant occasion.

The Ultra Purified Water plant produced by the Naval Research and Development Unit was installed at the Dialysis and Kidney Transplant Unit of Kandy Teaching Hospital on 30th June and it was the second such facility devised by the Navy. Earlier, the Navy set up similar facility at the Dialysis and Kidney Transplant Unit of National Hospital, Colombo. These noble initiatives have been implemented by the Sri Lanka Navy as part of its Community Development and Social Responsibility projects under the directives of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne.

The purified water processed through this unit that was produced using stainless steel equipment and materials of the highest quality, has been awarded the Association of Advanced Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) certification. Meanwhile, the market price of this Ultra Purified Water plant is estimated to be Rs. 13 million. However the Navy’s Research and Development Unit had produced this unit at relatively low cost, incurring only Rs. 1.7 m

This significant feat is another monumental achievement of the Sri Lanka Navy in empowering the national programme of Kidney Disease Prevention. Besides, the Research and Development Unit of the Navy is determined to install similar facilities at every hospital that possesses dialysis units. This magnanimous effort of the Sri Lanka Navy operated by the Navy’s Research and Development Unit, has received high local and international recognition, as it is making every endeavour to create a healthy community.
