Navy renders assistance to arrest persons engaged in illegal activities
 

The Navy rendered assistance to take into custody 09 persons who had involved in illegal acts at separate locations in the island. Accordingly, 05 persons engaged in illegal fishing, 2 persons for possessing a sea turtle and venison and 2 more suspects with illegal packets of cigarettes and Pregabalin capsules were apprehended by the Navy.

Nava personnel attached to the North Central and North Western Naval Commands arrested five (05) persons engaged in illegal fishing using unauthorized fishing nets at Nachchikudah and Mattativu lagoon on 21 September 2017. The arrested persons along with a dinghy, a local fishing craft (wallam) and illegal fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Fisheries Directors at Vedithalthivu and Puttalam respectively for further investigations.

On receipt of an intelligence tip-off, naval personnel attached to the Northwestern Naval Command in coordination with STF personnel in Puttalam arrested a person with 30 kg of venison, during a search carried out at Thabowa in Puttalam on 19th September. The suspect and venison were handed over to the Puttalam Police for necessary legal action.

On information received by the Navy, a group of naval personnel attached to the Western Naval Command together with STF officials in Thummulla nabbed a suspect with 200 packets of foreign cigarettes during a raid carried out in Mount Lavinia on 20th September. The suspect along with illegal packets of foreign cigarettes was handed over to the Mount Lavinia Police for onward legal action.

Prompted by a tip-off, naval troops attached to the North Central Naval Command, during a search, managed to apprehend a person for possessing a live turtle in the locality of Vankalai on 20th September. The person and the turtle were handed over to the Vankalai Police Station for further investigations.

On information received by the Navy, naval personnel attached to the Northern Naval Command with the assistance of the officials of the Jaffna Food and Drugs Inspector’s Office arrested a person selling Pregabalin capsules illegally during a search conducted in Jaffna town on 20 September 2017. The arrested person along with 165 capsules in his possession was handed over to the officers of the Jaffna Food and Drug Inspector’s Office for further investigations.
