RO plant donated under HE the President’s guidance to the village of the girl who had excelled in Year 5 Scholarship Exam

The Reverse Osmosis plant, constructed by the Sri Lanka Navy utilising the financial assistance provided by the Firefly Mission of Singapore, was vested in the residents of Pahala Diggala today (23 October 2017) at a ceremony attended by the Commanding Officer SLNS Pandukabaya in Poonewa, Captain Nishantha Ranaweera and the Principal of the Pahala Diggala Primary School. It was installed as part of the Naval Social Responsibility (NSR) Project of the Sri Lanka Navy in line with the concept of ‘A Compassionate Government, A Stable Country’.

The RO plant was installed in Pahala Diggala, a remote village where B.D. Dulanjalee Madumalee Premaratne, a student at the Pahala Diggala Primary School in the Galawela Education Zone, who had excelled in this year’s Year 5 Scholarship Examination despite enormous economic difficulties, resides. Her father had died of the chronic kidney disease in 2015 at the age of 34 and his daughter, Dulanjalee is incidentally the first ever student to pass the Year 5 Scholarship Examination in the school’s history.

Upon hearing Dulanjalee’s exceptional achievement, His Excellency the President Maithripala Sirisena had offered her a scholarship and measures had also been initiated, to install an RO plant in her village where 40 persons are reported to be suffering from the chronic kidney disease. The newly-installed RO plant will provide clean water to 500 families in the area as well as 96 students of the Pahal Diggala Primary School.

The Navy has installed 278 RO plants, providing clean drinking water to 124,109 families and 89,783 students so far. Being a key partner in the national effort initiated by His Excellency the President to eliminate chronic kidney disease from Sri Lanka, the SLN, in collaboration with the Presidential Task Force on Prevention of Chronic Kidney Disease, plans to install more such RO plants in order to provide the public with clean drinking water.
