War heroes commemorated on Remembrance Day
The main ceremony to commemorate war heroes who paid the final sacrifice for motherland was held at the Viharamahadevi Park today (11th November). Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Sirimevan Ranasinghe represented the Navy at the ceremony.
Speaker of the Parliament, Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, State Minister of Defence, Hon. Ruwan Wijewardene, Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Kapila Waidyaratne PC, Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Vice Marshal DLS Dias and a large number of senior officers and other ranks from tri-services were present on this occasion. Meanwhile, several retired war veterans were pinned with Honourable Service Medals by the Hon. Speaker, in recognition of their distinguished military service.
To coincide with the main event, the Sri Lanka Navy also held Remembrance Day ceremonies today at the Naval Headquarters in Colombo, in the presence of Director General Medical Services, Surgeon Rear Admiral Lalith Ekanayake and other naval areas under the patronage of respective Area Commanders and Commanding Officers. Naval personnel attached to all naval establishments, ships and craft participated in ceremonies to pay tribute to the fallen war heroes. Two-minute silence was observed in honour of the war heroes and the bugle call - last post was played in tribute to their sacrifices.
