Navy nabs three persons engaged in illegal activities
 

On receipt of information to the Navy, naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command apprehended two persons for possessing 13 kg of turtle meat, during a search conducted in Vankalai area on last 8th of February.

The apprehended suspects are inhabitants of the same area and they, along with turtle meat were handed over to Vankalai Police for onward legal action.

Meanwhile, on information received by the Navy, Naval personnel attached to Western Naval Command in coordination with officials of Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, apprehended a person with some Thresher Sharks weighing 268 Kg, during a raid carried out in Negombo harbour on last 9th of February.

The Thresher Shark which is a rare endangered specie living in Sri Lankan waters, has been protected by law under the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act. Killing the Thresher Shark by fishermen or as a recreation activity is totally prohibited by the Act.  

The apprehended person with the Thresher sharks was handed over to the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Negombo for legal proceedings.
