Navy trims portion of banyan tree leaning dangerously across Hamilton Canal

Naval personnel attached to SLNS Kelani on 16 March rendered assistance to remove a large portion of the banyan tree that was leaning dangerously across Hamilton Canal, Elakanda posing greater problems to the community.

Several large branches of the tree located in front of the Sri Gangathilaka Temple in Elakanda had fallen into the Hamilton Canal flowing nearby, congesting the downstream of water over a long period of time and causing problems to the community and fisher folk. After the Navy being alerted of this situation, a group of 40 naval personnel was deployed to trim the portion of the tree that was dangerously poised, under the guidance of Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenna. The naval personnel after a strenuous effort cleared the congested area removing the branches of the huge tree.

The Chief Prelate of the Sri Gangathilaka Temple, fisher folk in the region and other interested parties extended their heartfelt gratitude to the Sri Lanka Navy for the careful execution of the task alleviating a long waited community issue.
