Navy Cup Inter-club Hockey Tournament concludes on successful note
 

Sri Lanka Air Force emerged champions at the Navy Cup Inter-club Hockey Tournament -2018, organized by the Sri Lanka Navy Hockey for the second consecutive year. A number of dominant hockey clubs in the island including teams from tri-forces and Police locked their horns to win the coveted title in the tournament which was held at the Navy Hockey Ground in Welisara on 7th and 8th April 2018.

Beating rest of the teams, the Navy and Air Force Sports Clubs were through to the final in which Air Force secured the victory by 1 goal to 0. Airman WWAPU Fernando of Air Force was adjudged the best player of the tournament. Meanwhile, Navy’s Able Seaman Darshana Abeywickrama won the award for the best striker of the tournament. Further, Mr. Thilak Fernando of the Old Benedict’s Sports Club and Mr. VKC Krishan of BRC Sports Club became the most outstanding veteran player and the emerging player of the tournament respectively.

Chief of Staff of the Navy, Rear Admiral Neil Rosayro graced the awards ceremony as the Chief Guest. Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, Chairman Sri Lanka Navy Hockey, Captain Anura Tennekoon, its Secretary, Lieutenant Commander Thilina Karunarathna, senior officers from the Naval Headquarters and Western Naval Command and a large number of athletes were also present on the occasion.

Further, Navy made use of the live video streaming technology to get the off-field umpire decision making, with limited camera and other equipment at their disposal. It remains to be the very first utilization of such technology for any inter-club Hockey Tournament held in Sri Lanka. The instance which marked a significant milestone in the game of hockey and Sri Lanka Navy was praised by all sport clubs participated in the tournament.
