Navy renders assistance to clean Muhandirampitiya lagoon area in Negombo
 

A campaign to clean the quay area of Muhandirampitiya lagoon in Negombo which had become stagnated with collection of debris was conducted yesterday (25th August). The cleaning effort was assisted by the Navy in full swing.

The cleaning campaign organized under the second phase of Sirasa Media Network's 'Sirasa Gammedda V-Force was also joined by the Negombo Municipal Council, University students and several volunteer organizations. Going by the directives of the Naval Headquarters and guidance of the Commander Western Naval Area, Rear Admiral Nishantha Ulugethana, a large number of naval personnel including Navy divers attached to the Western Naval Command assisted this magnanimous effort. At the end of the programme the participants managed to collect 750 kg of plastic, 50 kg of polythene, 50 kg of rigifoam and 3000 kg of organic waste. The heaps of collected plastic and polythene were handed over to the Navy's polythene and plastic recycling centre operated in Crow Island, Mattakkuliya.

Besides, going by the visionary concept of the President His Excellency, Maithripala Sirisena and directives of the Ministry of Defence, Sri Lanka Navy takes much interest in maintaining the beaches, lagoons and mangrove swamps in their optimal condition. Further, the conservation of marine resources has been recognized as a prime duty of the sea going arm. Accordingly, the Navy featuring a competent naval personnel, joins hands with a number of interested stakeholders for the conservation of the marine resources for the future generation.
