Navy assists apprehension of 14 persons engaged in illegal acts
 

Navy apprehended 14 persons for engaging in illegal fishing at different locations and transportation of turtle flesh for sale, during the last few days. 

Accordingly, Naval personnel attached to the North Western Naval Command apprehended 02 persons who were transferring flesh of illegally killed turtles, for sale, at Arrippu area on 20th August 2018. Twenty two (22) Kg of turtle flesh, a dinghy and 5 banned nets were also taken into Naval custody and these items along with the persons were handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Department at Madu for onward legal action.  

A troop of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command in a coordination with STF Pulmodai and Kuchchaweli Police apprehended 2 persons who were transferring a haul of fish caught by using illegal explosive, on last 19th August. Along with the suspects 1269 Kg of caught fish and the small lorry used for transportation fish were taken into Naval custody. The apprehended persons, fish and the lorry were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee.

Meanwhile, 5 persons engaged in illegal fishing in the sea area off Norway island were apprehend by a naval troop attached to the Eastern Naval Command, on 23rd August. Along with them, an unauthorized fishing net and a dinghy were also taken into naval custody. The apprehended persons along with their fishing gear were handed over to the Assistant Director of Fisheries in Muthoor, for onward action. 

Further, a group of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command on last 26th August, apprehended 5 persons engaged in illegal fishing practices in the seas off Kallaru. Five (05) Kg of caught fish, a banned net and a dinghy were also nabbed by the Navy. The apprehended suspects together with the caught fish and fishing gears were handed over to the Kuchchaweli Police for onward legal action.
