US - SL Navies rescue 7 fishermen stranded in southern seas
 

Sri Lanka Naval Ship (SLNS) Jayasagara attached to the Southern Naval Command,with the assistance of the USA Navy rescued 7 fishermen in distress, aboard a fishing boat with an engine failure, off the Galle harbour yesterday (09th October).

The 7 fishermen aboard the fishing vessel ‘Suma Baba-03’ had left the Galle harbour on 03rd October for fishing and a failure inflicted on their boat engine whilst in the sea area of Galle. Meanwhile, USS “Decatur”, an American warship which was sailing on a close passage had observed the distressed trawler and rescued it with the crew safely. Later on, the US ship had reported this incident to the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) in Colombo. The Navy, reacted promptly on receipt of information, deployed SLNS Jayasagara from the Southern Naval Command to bring the distressed fishermen and the trawler ashore.

 Subsequently, the fishermen rescued by the American warship USS “Decatur” were taken over by SLNS Jayasagara about 130 nautical miles south of Galle harbour and the trawler was also safely towed to the Galle harbour.
