Navy apprehends 07 persons engaged in illegal activities
 

Sri Lanka Navy apprehended 07 persons engaged in illegal activities at several locations in the island during the past few days. These suspects were held by the Navy for engaging in illegal fishing and using explosive for fishing.

Accordingly, Naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command apprehended 02 persons who were engaging in illegal fishing in Jinnapuram area and the seas off jinnapuram, on 2nd Nov. There, 3 banned nets, 3 dinghies, 573 Kg of fish catch and other fishing gears were taken into naval custody and they were handed over to the Director of Fisheries-Trincomalee for onward legal action.

A troop of Naval personnel attached to North Western Naval Command whilst on patrol in Daluwa area on 3rd November, recovered 03 banned nets and these nets were handed over to Deputy Fisheries Inspector-Puttalam for legal action.

Meanwhile, on information received to the Navy, a troop of Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command in collaboration with STF-Mannnar apprehended 03 suspects engaged in illegal fishing practices using explosive in Southbar area on 5th Nov. A dinghy and 50 nos of gelignite sticks were also apprehended. The persons with the apprehended dinghy and gelignite sticks were handed over to Police STF-Mannar for legal action.

On 6th November, 41 suspicious polythene sacks were recovered in Vankalai beach area by a troop of Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command. The recovered sacks contained 9532 packets of Glyphosate and this haul of packets were handed over to Customs Office-Jaffna for onward legal action.

Further, on information received to the Navy, 20 Nos of gelignite sticks which were hidden under a bush in Southbar area, were recovered by a troop of Naval personnel attached to the North Central Naval Command in collaboration with Mannar Police, on last 8th Nov.

A troop of Naval personnel attached to the North Western Naval Command apprehended 2 persons who engaged in illegal fishing, in the seas west of Arippu area on last 10th Nov. Eight (08) Kg of fish catch, a dinghy and a banned net were also apprehended by the Navy. The suspects along with the fishing gears and the caught fish were handed over to Fisheries Inspector-Mannar for onward legal action.
