Sri Lanka Navy organises CISM Day Run - 2019

The International Military Sport Council (CISM) Day Run - 2019 was flagged off at the Galle Face Green Colombo today (18th February).

Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy and a large number of tri-service personnel including a group of wheel-chair ridden war heroes took part in this annual CISM Day Run event.

The ultimate goal of the CISM run is to contribute to world peace by uniting the armed forces through sports, in keeping with its motto, 'Friendship through Sports'. The event kicked off at the Colombo lighthouse premises and reached its half way mark at the Galle Face Hotel roundabout before returning to the point where it commenced. On completion of the run, the participants were presented certificates in recognition of their attendance in this event that aims at promoting the practice of sports in the military context.

The International Military Sports Council (CISM) is one of the largest multidisciplinary organizations in the world established on 18th February 1948. Currently, armed force personnel of 133 countries have become members of the CISM and Sri Lanka has been a member of this organization since 1996. Apart from the CISM Day Run, the CISM World Summer Games and the CISM World Winter Games are also organised every four years with the attendance of military athletes form member countries.
