Navy finds 15,000 cubes of illegally mined sand in Thippansetti

Marine Personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command in coordination with the officials of the Sri Lanka Police and Sri Lanka Geological Survey and Mining Bureau managed to find heaps of sand that being mined illegally, sands valid permit in Thippansetti, Periya Kinniya yesterday (22nd February).

Accordingly, 15,000 cubes of illegally mined sand were found in the general area of Thippansetti located in the proximity of Mahaweli River. Onward investigation into the incident is carried out by the Police and Geological Survey and Mining Bureau.

Further, on 20th February, Navy rendered assistance to find same amount of sand (15,000 cubes) illegally mined without permit, from the same locality. This illegal activity practiced with scant regard for the subsequent environmental impacts causes much damage to all community who benefit from the Mahaweli River. As such, the Navy will continue to assist the Police and Geological Survey and Mining Bureau in order to restrain these illegal sand mining activities.
