Haul of heroin and fishing trawler seized by the Navy brought ashore

The haul of heroin along with the multiday fishing trawler seized by naval personnel attached to SLNS ‘Sagara’ during a special mission carried out yesterday (22nd April), was brought to the Trincomalee harbour this morning (23rd April).

Based on information received from the Police Narcotic Bureau and State Intelligence Service, the Sri Lanka Navy carried out a comprehensive surveillance operation off north-eastern coast and intercepted a multiday fishing trawler with 05 Sri Lankan nationals, while smuggling approximately 274kg of heroin.

It is suspected that the seized stock of narcotic substance is attempted to be smuggled into the island via sea. The arrested suspects have been identified as residents of Madurankuliya and Jaffna, aged 31,39,40,44 and 45. Police Narcotics Bureau is expected to conduct further investigation with regard to the incident.
