Fourteen (14) persons apprehended for engaging in illegal fishing

Navy apprehended fourteen (14) persons who engaged in illegal fishing in the seas off Upparu, yesterday (14th May).

Accordingly, a group of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command, during a patrol carried out in the seas off Upparu, apprehended these 14 persons who had used unauthorized nets for fishing activities. Along with the suspects, 02 dinghies, 02 outboard motors(OBMs) and 02 unauthorized fishing nets were also taken into naval custody. The suspects have been identified as residents of Kinniya and China Bay, from 24 to 55 years of age.

The apprehended persons, dinghies, OBMs, unauthorized nets and other fishing gear were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Trincomalee for onward action, through Sri Lanka Coast Guard.
