Disaster awareness programme held for naval personnel

A disaster awareness programme for naval personnel, on precautions to save lives and minimize damage during a flood, was held at the main auditorium of SLNS Nipuna on 11th June 2019.

Working in line with a timely initiative mooted by Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, a number of disaster preparedness programmes have been set in motion as of now. Accordingly, this event took place in the Southern Naval Command with the participation of a large number of officers and sailors attached to the command.

The programme was conducted by Staff Officer Land Operations (South), Commander Wasantha Samaraweera. He conducted the programme sharing the previous experience of the Navy in flood situations and shed light on distinctive geographic features in the Southern Province, which pose a flood threat from time to time. Besides, the naval personnel were also made aware on possible resources and resource persons that could be solicited in such a situation.

The event marked the inauguration of a series of disaster awareness programmes which are scheduled to be held in the Southern Naval Command, covering all naval bases.
