Navy assists to clean a canal in Colombo area

A canal clogged with debris in Colombo area was cleaned by the Canal Cleaning Special Project established at SLNS Thakshila, on 13th June 2019.

Accordingly, Kalu Ela which flows down across Wattala closer to Colombo-Negombo main road was filled with debris and epidemic aquatic plants creating a threat of floods to the area. Having observed this situation by the Navy, a team of naval personnel consists of 21 sailors was deployed to clean this canal.

Sri Lanka Navy has established a special unit to clean the canals and tanks which are covered and blocked with debris and to bring those back to useable resources.

Further, due to the prevailing rains in these days, cleaning underside of bridges, rivers and other waterways which might increase the water level up to floods, are being already carried out in all naval commands, under the directives of Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva. An awareness programme for naval personnel about precautionary measures at a sudden flood has also been launched.
