Navy carries out range of events as part of national drug prevention week

The President His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena has declared a national drug prevention week from 23rd June to 01st July. Accordingly, the Sri Lanka Navy has also launched a range of events in line with that national programme.

While busting suspects for drug smuggling, drug peddling and possession of drugs through naval raids and search operations, the Navy also conducts counseling programmes in all naval commands to prevent people from drug addiction. Apart from that, a number of awareness programmes on drug abuse has also been organized at Divisional Secretariat level by the Navy, in collaboration with the Presidential Task Force for drug prevention.

To coincide with this timely initiative, a drug prevention programme was held at the Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake Auditorium today (25th June). During the programme social, financial and family issues tied with drug addiction was discussed. The event was attended by a group of naval personnel attached to SLNS Parakrama.

Besides the national drug prevention week, the Navy is also conducting a series of awareness programmes on drug abuse partnering with the Presidential Task Force for drug prevention.

Further, the Navy, under the able guidance of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva, is playing a pivotal role through wide ranging programmes in patrolling the island’s waters to prevent drugs being smuggled to the country.
