Four (04) persons apprehended for engaging in illegal fishing

A group of naval personnel apprehended 04 persons for engaging in illegal fishing in Kokkuthuduwai area, Mullaitivu this morning (15th July 2019).

A group of naval personnel attached to the Eastern Naval Command, during a search conducted in Kokkuthuduwai area, apprehended these suspects for engaging in fishing using unauthorized fishing nets. Along with the suspects the Navy also seized a dinghy, an outboard motor and a 510-foot-long unauthorized fishing net. The suspects have been identified as residents of Pulmoddai area, aged 28,30 and 44.

The apprehended persons along with the dinghy, outboard motor and unauthorized fishing net were handed over to the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries in Mullaitivu for onward investigation. The fish stock and marine resources are subjected to needless destruction as a result of illegal fishing methods practiced in Sri Lankan waters. As such the Sri Lanka Navy remains vigilant around the clock to apprehend people engage in illegal fishing and produce them for necessary legal action.
