Nine persons held by Navy for illegal fishing

Naval personnel held nine (09) persons for engaging in illegal fishing in the seas off Norway island, Trincomalee on 28th July 2019.

Accordingly, the crew of a Inshore Patrol Craft attached to the Eastern Naval Command, during a patrol Carried out around the Norway island, apprehended these fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing using banned nets. A dinghy, an OBM and a banned net were also taken into naval custody . The suspects are residents of Kinniya and China Bay areas aged 17 - 34.

The suspects along with the dinghy, OBM and the net were handed over to the office of the Assistant Directorate of Fisheries in Trincomalee for onward action.

By using this type of banned nets, maritime environment and fish breeding places are destroyed. Considering that factor, Sri Lanka Navy carries out continuous operations in order to protect the maritime resources and the preferable fish density.
