GCE O/L top achievers from naval families receive scholarships

The ceremony to award scholarships to 2018 GCE O/L top achievers (with 9 As) from naval families was held at the Admiral Somathilaka Dissanayake Auditorium of SLNS Parakrama, on 9th August 2019. The ceremony was graced by Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Piyal De Silva. This scholarship programme was mooted by the Welfare Unit of the Sri Lanka Navy to help the future education of the children of naval families, for getting through the GCE O/L examination with flying colours.

Addressing the gathering, the Commander of the Navy congratulated the students who excelled in one of the most competitive examinations and advised them to continue their education with the same level of motivation while inculcating good virtues and attitudes. Further, the Navy Commander urged the students to do away with drugs which has currently sneaked into the school system as well. Vice Admiral Silva wished best of luck for their GCE A/L examination which is due in another two years and revealed that the Navy has planned to award scholarships for the A/L top achievers those qualifying for university entrance, from this year onwards.

Accordingly, 19 top achievers including 2 children of disabled naval war heroes who are on retirement now and 17 children of naval personnel who are in active service, were awarded scholarships during the ceremony. As such, an incentive of Rs. 5000.00 each will be deposited in their bank accounts every month, with effective from August 2019 until July 2021.

The occasion was also attended by Director General Services, Rear Admiral Nilantha Heenatigala, Director Naval Welfare, Commodore Senarath Wijesooriya, senior officers attached to the Naval Headquarters and family members of scholarship recipients.
